Looking for a decent host + qns

I've been using free host for the past few years and decided to get a decent paid hosting (google brought me here). Took time browsing through the forums and there're a whole bunch of them listed (local and overseas).

To be honest, I looked through the first 30 and I gave up. Besides, I don't really know how to compare (like what's shared, dedicated hosting etc). Also, any difference in hosting in local and overseas? I've read up and some says not much difference?

Here's my minimum requirement;
1.) at least 500MB of space
2.) at least 30GB of bandwidth
3.) must have cPanel
4.) hosting must equip with the latest PHP, mySQL, PHPmyAdmin
6.) preferred credit/debit card payment
5.) last of all, reliable.

Do you have any preference if the server is hosted local or overseas?

Basically your requirements are not that high. What type of website are you going to host and how did you come to the 30GB bandwidth requirement?

With the competition so tight nowadays, you are right about 'not much of a difference' between the hosting companies. However, what you need to consider is the technical support, customer service and uptime. These are normally what separates the reliable servers and the 'fly-by-night' companies.

My suggestion is to list down a few providers, and then after that, do a search or review on the web for each of the provider that you have listed.

Knowing whether you want local or international servers hosting your site is another issue altogether. Because, you must know where your site visitors come from.

If the 30GB of traffic that you need comes locally (80% local, 20% overseas visitors), then I suggest you go with providers who have local servers. If majority of your visitors are overseas, then go with a local provider with overseas servers instead.

It can be very confusing for a beginner to go through the technicalities of web hosting but one important thing to take note is that, do not be taken in by providers who 'oversells' namely stating 'unlimited' webspace n bandwidth because in this world, there is a limit to everything.

Hope this helps.

Taking into consideration your requirements, have a look at 4java.ca - it is well-known company which is able to offer you the solution you need and registers domain names at affordable price.

In fact if the company is stable and fast there is no matter of where is it located.

According to the requirments posted, I can recommend you pivotalweb.com as a host for this purpose, offering suitable deals for reasonable price, and offering lifetime discopunts with the code 50life - half price for life for shared hosting, IMHO this is really profitable.

If you need a decent paid hosting service, it's available from serverpoint.com, geohost.ca and dayanahost.com.
These companies have web masters friendly package plans which are resourceful and well supported.

Thanks for all the offers and replies. I will take time to consider. As for why I would need such a high bandwidth because I'm currently having a project which requires streaming video (news) on an interactive flash web.

I'm hosting my portfolio website which showcase my work and also a place where I do experimental projects to show my clients.

Sparkstation just started their webhosting services recently I think, so I think the servers and bandwidth are still pretty good. You should try them!

I am currently using their VPS service and so far little complaints about it. Well, I'm a fuzzy person though :P
