any help is greatly appreciated =D
i'm thinking of hooking up a cpu to my existing broadband 256...
wat r the minimum requirements for hardware needed? which os is better to use? oso for software like php, asp n sql.... where to get it? best is can don't buy?
as for the domain name reg... where do i haf 2 register? need to pay $$$ osoz?
btw... is 256 bandwidth enuff? locals(SG) can c my webpages can liaoz.... or do i need 512?
jes wanna set up a server @ home for fun onli.. best is low cost oso~
thanks for ur help!~ =D newbie here~
1st thing to consider, what connection would you be using?? SCV or broadband services such as Pacific Internet or Singtel BB?
2nd. You will need to leave the PC on 24 hours else if you reboot the PC, the 'IP' might change since they are all using DHCP.
3rd. How much are you willing to spend for this on a monthly budget? This includes montnly PUB bills and other charges.
4th. As for OS, are you going to use Win2k or Linux such as Redhat?
5th. You can download PHP from http://www.php.net , Redhat from http://www.redhat.com and MySQL from http://www.mysql.com , I am sure the experts here can guide you on the installation as well as configurations.
6th. As for the domain thing, you will need to point the DNS to your server IP. It cost between USD$8.88 to USD$14.95 or more for a TLD domain such as .com/.org/.net

thanks 4 the reply =D
1) right now i'm on SingNet broadband 256kbps... wonder if this is sufficient?
2) leaving the comp on 24hrs is fine with me, since my comps oso always on 1
3) as for PUB and hardware costs... it's ok lo~
4) i'm still a little blur abt using WIn2k or linux. coz if i wanna use ASP ... mus use win2k rite? but need to pay asp.net license or sumthing? if no charges involved... IYO which is a better choice?
5) i those those addons r free oso~ ;P
6) hmmz... looks like i need to reg for a domain name to point to my ip addr afterall. i can oso use ip as my url which i can gib 2 ppl rite?
btw... normally do servers haf a form of protection such as firewall? need any additional steps 2 do it?
hehe... kinda long on the msg...
tHanks duDe!~ :D

No offence but, in short, its not possible for a newbie to setup hosting on non-static IP. Your IP changes everytime you reconnect, so its not possible to use your IP as a DNS server.
The nearest there is for such an arrangement is DynDNS to host your domain, but there's a charge and you still need to manage the server to update your IP and so on.
Advice: Don't bother. Host your webpage on some free provider. Its not worth the learning experience unless you are willing to fork out the $$ for a proper server ($300+/month) or Magix PremiumSurf static IP ADSL ($198/month)

Hi,
Take a look at this mini-HOWTO at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Domain.html
There is a little guide which I think will help you to setup your PC as a server.
Hope this helps ;)
Thanks.
Kindest regards,
Choon
My fren did manage to set up his site via PacNet in his home. I think he also used a router too.

He's using a PC as a router. As long as he installs the web server on the PC connected to the modem, its okay.

Firstly singnet BB is not enought you can't trust me on that.
As well as I have seen mass singnet user disconnecting in the morning. Their connection wouldn't stay up longer than 2days compare to cable user.
If you know linux it would be a better choice because is much more stable. If you doesn't go for windows 2000.
If you want to go for win2k make sure that you have a lisenced version hehe
Excuse me ... search SGWHT ... I posted and got some answers on this topic ....
Singnet BB 256Kbps is NOT sufficient to stream WinAmp..
I have my "test" server setup and running on SNBB 512Kbps at home ... access speed is okay ... running sometime from DynDns.org as suggested by SG.GS ...
Configuring and running a server from home is relatively technical and please be warned that ISPs DO NOT ENCOURAGE this...

hmmmz... wat if i got a burned copy of win2k frm moi frend? will anything happen if i choose to install it?
i haf tried linux redhat... so now deciding which os is better?
hmmmz.....i agree tat 256 might b a little slow.. so might upgrade to 512 lo~. heard frm moi frends tat cable sometimes go as slow as 56k... is tat true?
as for the mass disconnect thinggy... nothing will happen rite? jes reconnect once the connection is stable lO~
eee.... the whole idea is after reconnect your IP will be different, then u have to repoint all the domains to the new IP, and it will take at least 24 hr to propagate.
About the burn copy i'm not very sure also, but i suppose even it is a licensed version, it is only for 1 server. Once u expose to net and become public, all these thing need to take care of it properly.
