Hi, Today is my first day of joining this forum and also my first thread. Hope someone can help me.
I plan to set up a homepages to sell my product. I have the following qns
1) Who is the cheapest webhosting in Singapore.
2) Do I have to get Domain Name separately or I can get the same company
who provide webhosting. Is this way, cheaper or is there any
webhosting company who provide free domain registration (is there any
contract term).
3) I heard from one of the web hosting company say that if I get the
domain name registration from the cheaper company may end up
transfer problem such as cannot do transfer....
4) I refer to some of the pricing from the web hosting. It has a feature
say 6GB transfer per day. what does this mean.
5) Please advise if I want to go for a webhosting company, what do I have
to look for.
6) If I want to register with Namecheap.com how to go about. They are
foreign company and the price quoted should be in US$ right? (I assume).
Sorry, too many qns raise but really hope someone can help me.
Thank you
Regards,
Richard

I'll try to answer some of your questions
2) Do I have to get Domain Name separately or I can get the same company

contract term).
>> You can get separately or through your hosting provider. Make sure that you will be the owner of the domain if going through the provider. Some providers register clients' domains under their name and therefore can give problem transferring it later. There are a lot of domain registrars out there with reasonable price. I can recommend NameCheap.com. Free domain is usually given if you purchase so-called premium hosting package (i.e. the more expensive ones) and most likely not free for life, but rather only 1 year.
3) I heard from one of the web hosting company say that if I get the
domain name registration from the cheaper company may end up
transfer problem such as cannot do transfer....
>> It depends. Like I said above, NameCheap offers domain for US$8.88/year and I haven't heard any problem transferring domain
4) I refer to some of the pricing from the web hosting. It has a feature
say 6GB transfer per day. what does this mean.
>> My guess is your bandwidth is capped at 6Gb per day. IMO, that's very big.
5) Please advise if I want to go for a webhosting company, what do I have
to look for.
>> Here's from my experience:
- Support: ask if they provide 24x7 support and what's their response time. If they do give 24x7 support, try to e-mail then at odd hour and see how fast they reply. Also see if they actually give solutions or just vague answer
- Uptime: ask if they can give you uptime statistics for the server you're going to be in for the past few months. Anything below 99% is totally unacceptable.
- Speed: ask if they have a sample file to download (to test connection speed) and try to ping to their server
- Check their support forum (if any). Is there any community there? Are they friendly? Do support staffs actively answer customer questions?
- Price: don't go for the dirt cheap host. With very small profit margin, it's impossible for them to give good support. If a host offer 10Gb space and 100Gb bandwidth for S$10.00, I'll say runa away from them.
- Backup: how often they do backup? Is there any off-site backup?
- If you're selling products, most likely you'll need e-commerce applications such as shopping cart which may need secure connection (https). Ask if they have shared certificate or if you have to buy yourself. Can they help to setup things for you?
6) If I want to register with Namecheap.com how to go about. They are
foreign company and the price quoted should be in US$ right? (I assume).
>> Yes, their price is in US$. Go to their website and sign-up for an account. After that you should be able to buy domain.
HTH!

Thank you for answer some my qns, please accept my salute

>>I refer to some of the pricing from the web hosting. It has a feature

1) What is the bandwith size normally
2) Thank you your valuable experience. but I thought that if I am going for e-commence, all connection and other stuff like the credit card secure setup.... should be under my expense. Please advise what do you mean by "If you're selling products, most likely you'll need e-commerce applications such as shopping cart which may need secure connection (https). 3) I don;t have a credit card to pay, is there any way I can make payment. (Can I go use other mean eg bank transfer (a bit expensive), remittance thru westen union)....
4) You have recommended Namecheap.com. R there really very good. do they provide hosting
If yes, pls elaborate more about their service
if not, pls recommend a singapore base hosting company you think their service is good.

Hi

To be exact, it'll be the data transfer being 6GB, or 6000MB per day. Imagine, having 6000MB worth of files or data traffic in and out of your account. Basically, i wonder if there is a mistake, 6GB per day will equate to 180GB per month, which is a very big amount. If i am not wrong, he should be showing 6GB per month.
6GB per month is still quite a lot, which picking top 10 of the websites i have don't use as much. It boils down to how much graphic you have on the site, layout and how heavy the traffic(number of visitors) can be. Definitely, things like forum, emails and such also take up bandwidth, not to exclude up and downloading of pages and files.
What i'll recommend to anyone will be to take up a reasonable amount of data transfer in a package, then have a consensus with your provider for data transfer upgrade when you need. Since it's a e-commerce site, make sure that they don't cut off your account, as in suspend it in case of excess usage of diskspace/bandwidth.
2) Thank you your valuable experience. but I thought that if I am going for e-commence, all connection and other stuff like the credit card secure setup.... should be under my expense. Yes, you're right. But the application is merely the application, without any provider. It is shopping cart, i suggest you to do a round around the net. Basically user can click on some selected items, and it'll be put in the virtual cart, calculating the total amount. https is a secure connection, meant to encrypt the data while in the processing of travelling through the network. Some providers have shared certificates, while some require you to purchase one for your usage.
For credit card payment providers like worldpay and such, they will be providing you the medium for credit card payment, linking the payment site to their server, once transactiongo through, redirecting back to your site. It is different from the shopping cart.

Well, actually thereare many good and recommended domain name registrar out there. e.g. enom, namecheap, register.com. I think enom will be the most popular one, and from the way they are being structured, it is very easy to get someone to register a domain for you from them. Their domain name account interface is quite user-friendly too. Short, simple and sweet.
4) You have recommended Namecheap.com. R there really very good. do they provide hosting

Usually registrar's web hosting are more costly than usual. Just do up a thread in the Web Hosting Request forum, stating your needs and requesting a local server, you should be getting high responses. But if you don't mind paying good money for it, perhaps the usual recommended ones, like sg.gs and iwi etc.

Hi,
Thank you for answer some my qns, please accept my salute
Please allow me to further my question:
1) What is the bandwith size normally :
Each provider has different packages on offer - some also allow you to pay for increased use in slabs.
Do you have an estimate for the size of your website (total of all pages + database). A rough thumbrule would be to start with data transfer of between 10 to 20 times the total file size - since in most cases any single user would see only a fraction of the site, this should be adequate.
Some hosting providers allow unmetered usage (within reasonable limits, that is). Best option is to talk to 2 - 3 providers showing them the specific site you plan to put up, to get a reasonable answer.
3) I don;t have a credit card to pay, is there any way I can make payment. (Can I go use other mean eg bank transfer (a bit expensive), remittance thru westen union)....
Some local hosting providers accept local bank transfer (DBS / POSB / other) and will also register a domain name on your behalf. You can also try through paypal (haven't tried it myself, so can't tell you which domain registrars accept this).
If yes, pls elaborate more about their service
if not, pls recommend a singapore base hosting company you think their service is good.
Suggest you put a request giving your requirements in the hosting request forum - hosting providers will be able to respond with their offers including clarifications regarding bandwidth / payment / ecommerce solutions etc.
