View Full Version : Forum?
Hi all!
I recently went tru a number of forum softwares and am quite confuse and would need some advice.
From what i know, the more popular ones are vbulletin and invision, both which must pay...
But i also came across phpBB, which is a freeware???
What are the difference? y are so many ppl using vbulletin n invision rather phpBB???
i guess it depends on the people ...
and fyi invision is free.. paying is for the tech support.
vbulletin is not free thou...
the difference is the look and feel of the boards..
each has it's strength and weaknesses...

Yupz... try to go to the software forum and look if it support is good.. for me i prefer phpbb due to the number of mods, but others prefer IPS due to its support.. it's really up to the individual
There are also slightly different features in both forum softwares. So, evaluate your needs and make the right decision.

yes and if you want just to allow people to post with little or no control to the admin you can try the famous wwwboard http://www.scriptarchive.com/wwwboard.html
But be careful, wwwboard are easily hackable if you are not careful. In fact i got a method of doing so, but wont post here la
Thks 4 the advice guys!!!
deeply appreciate it.
1 more question...
does the support really play an important part???
I tot the software is really easy to use??
and can qoute me an ex. what form of support do u mean?
scripts? or ...
You might encounter problems like "how to backup the database", "i get this error" or whatever...... thus good support is always a plus.
I like the support invision power board's forum gives

from what i tried so far.
comparing phpbb, invisionboard and vbulletin
Fastest: invisionboard, vbulletin, phpbb.
easiest to customize: phpbb, invisionboard, vbulletin.
support: phpbb, vbulletin, invisionboard.
actually vbulletin support is fast, but becoz phpbb is a free board, therefore phpbb wins on this aspect as the support is just as fast, if not faster than vbulletin's support.
suitable for large forum: vbulletin, invisionboard, phpbb.
Avoid phpbb if you intend to mod it to contains all functions available from the other 2 boards as the number of sql queries will increase with every major modifications. See it in another way, phpbb is really good to modify to suit your needs.
i like phpbb's support, 2 major place to visit
www.phpbb.com

In my case, I have used invision and phpBB. Personally I like invision more as it features are more flexible. However I will prefer to use phpBB as it is more easy to start on and the backup/restore feature work well. Hence no problem if you move from one host to the next.
Recently I am told of this website for invision forum, www.invisionfree.com seem like it offer free hosting for invision forum. Maybe a good place to start for first timer.

I am another user of Invision power board. There is this small setup at golala.com that provides free hosted forums using IPB. Interesting. Based in Singapore I think.
I am using IPB as well, prefer it over phbb because its faster and a better search function.

If you are interested in heavy modification and support, you should check out phpBB. For the cost ( free ), I think it is a very solid option. Plus their community base is huge - check their forums and they are a very supportive community too.
Vbulletin is mostly used by corporates and large volume forums. But I have seen phpBB used for large boards too. Haven't come across IBF with a large user DB yet.

Seen phpBB used on phpBB site itself which probably has the max. no of members, while standard boards with a couple of thousand users can be handled by phpBB pretty well.

I have seen phpBB running in high volume. Thou may not be as good as VBulletin, but I think it will run guess fine. Plus phpBB large community is really useful especially when modding the forum. Alot of help can be seek from the community.
This is one of the largest phpBB board i've seen in my life

You can use a phpBB board to run big forum, by modifying the core engine carefully, which including how the board access, search the database.

invision is the fastest of all 3
vbulletin is the most powerful of all 3
phpBB has the most mods available considering all 3

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, since I don't know much about forums. "fastest" and "most mods" are quite self-explanatory, but what does "most powerful" mean in reference to forums?

not very true...
vb 2 still exists... and its the fastest as compared to invision

erm....powerful mean the coding ba...
correct me if i am wrong....
I have used all three and I must say that Invision Power Board is a great board to use and is very flexible.
phpbb is another board I use on another site and it is performing faultlessly as well plus it is a breeze to setup. phpbb has also got loads of support because of its popularity and I can recommend it too.

There's a pretty conventional way suggested by SG.GS sometime ago in his posts, although i can't recall it now. Let's hope he'll be kind a post something related soon.
What i can suggest is to get probably a common package, whatever you provider gives, e.g. 100MB diskspace should get data transfer of 3-6GB(usual). So perhaps you can start with this first, and monitor the usage closely. Definitely, remember to query your provider if they allow the flexibility for you to upgrade your plan as requirements increases, without some sort of additional fee for upgrades and downgrades. It'll be at best if you can request for a little table, how much additional you'll have to pay for every additional 1GB of data transfer required.
