View Full Version : php or asp
Hi guys, i need to develop a system that is for academic use
a few queries
i've been offered 2 packages, running on linux server, using php and mysql or should i go for windows 2000 server, mssql programming in asp
as i've a team of helpers too, we are not verse in both php and asp, given a timeframe of 7months to pick up the language
which is more easy to pickup, and easily accesible on personal coms at home running on windows, my preference would be php as it is opensource and lot of online support. however im still considering the options, and may post futhur questions in this forum again
thanks for all the input !
actually i think asp(cos i myself is more well versed in asp then php) is much easier to pick up then php and the only disadvantage is to get the license for mssql. Are you doing a project for a client? If so, perhaps u can ask them to buy the license.
ASP is definitely an easier language to pick up than compared to PHP from my personal experience. So, I would recommend you take up ASP if you want something easy to script. However, as you have said, PHP is open source and used on a *nix platform which is technically free while if you use ASP hosted on a Windows server, you might need to pay additional fees for the OS. However, the decision is for you to make.
magic, do you know any kind of programming/scripting language?
IMO,
PHP, MySQL.
Reason:
When using ASP/MSSQL, activate IIS in window and you can run ASP. As for MSSQL, if you do not have the license, it will cost you.
Personally, I start off learning ASP, but i feel that PHP is much more easier to pick up as a newbie. For local development, it is easier to setup. Go firepages.com.au, download phpDev package for windows, and you have everything ready (php, mysql, phpmyadmin) to start exploring. Furthermore, if you need to test it live, find a host that support php/mysql (usually cheaper than window hosting) and upload your files.
thanks for the advices
i know java programming and java script.
NeonHQ answer is what i might be lookin for, a free php package to help our team get started and exploring even using our personal pc.
Mssql is provided free by the client thou.. however, in the event we need to futhur develop our projs, have to pay license fees for other developments unless the license can be shared :)
hi there would you be interested to pay for such a project? I got programmers with Cold Fusion, Python, PHP, ASP, Flash and Database experience. Can deliver what you want.
If you know java, it shouldnt have any difficulty in picking up asp or php. Since most of the hosts provide php, you might want to give php a try. I think both of them are pretty easy, especially if you only develop normal web applications.

If you are thinking of picking up ASP now, lemme say: TOO LATE
Please drop the idea of investing time and effort (translating into money) learning an obsolete technology that will soon be left for dead by Microsoft.
Have a serious look at ASP.NET (http://asp.net) instead. Part of the overall .NET Framework (http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/using/understanding/), the platform to carry out Microsoft's .NET initiative.
Yup, Microsoft put all her eggs in this basket.

I haven't actually been touching any programming or scripting, except TCL which is less well known, html and a little php.
Got this interest to go into ASP/.Net and such, been hearing it and it certainly stirs a certain amount of curiousity on them.
But anyone here mind differentiating the difference between ASP and ASP.NET? Although browsed through some pages on them, but didn't really catch the ball. And what's icelava view in JSP?
