You should at least put your URL into Google and Yahoo, the 2 most popular ones. Just search for
search engine submit url
I have some here

What about meta tags??? Heard that this is needed in order for some search engine to search. Is this true? If so how to improve our chance of search with Free Listing? Care to help?
:D
Meta tags are no longer used by most search engines. To improve your listing, good linkback, good amount of keywords in the <title> & <body> are necessary.
It's gonna be long/impossible to list everything here. Search engine optimisation has no standard guidelines or rules, it's based on one's experience (trial & error).
personally, I run a few web sites and this information would be vital for me.
I understand that search engine change their methods of listing ever so often hence the SEO guru will have to note these changes and keep with the times.
I'm not looking out for the 1st / 2nd / 3rd placement for my keywords but generally looking for a listing on the search engine :: which in theory means if I search e.g royong.com - I would get a listing.
I used to be in tune to this - the days when META-TAGs rule and the days when every website was promoting itself as a Search Engine submitter of some sort ... but unfortunately, I'm out of touch and would be appreciative if anyone could enlighten me.
thanks ... :)
oh no ! when did this happen ??? i thought meta is still in use ... 2pid me

Same, I thought meta tag is still in use by most engine. It seem now that things have change alot.
Alien i dun understand what you mean by To improve your listing, good linkback, good amount of keywords in the <title> & <body> are necessary. Care to explain a little bit more in details :)
I think Teoma and Inktomi still use Meta Tags (I may be wrong), but you can easily do a simple test by adding a non-related keyword to the Meta Tag and search for that.
A good linkback (the number of sites linking to yours) will help as the SE will see it as a "popular site". To increase the number of linkback, you can link exchange (a simple text link is the best) with similar sites, asking other sites to link to yours, etc.
Keywords in the content and within all pages of your site, so say if you got a webhosting site, you need to have a good amount of keywords like 'webhosting' in your page, especially the main page content and also in the title page. If you can, ask your link partners to do a text link as "ABC Webhosting" to your site, so when the search engines index their site and better position you for the keyword "webhosting". (Sorry to say, it's hard to get a good position for the keyword webhosting).
Also use of <h1>, <strong> tag for the keyword in the content, and keyword in the URL like www.mydomain.com/webhosting might also help...
Wow, thats a bit of chimology here ... when did it get so complex. To me no having a top 5 placing is ok but at least able to appear in top 30 ... but after what alien has said, think its very difficult unless you have a lot of referrel links then :(

well I think you can always get the paid listing. In the case of yahoo, you will be listed together with the other paid listing site at the top.
For me ? Nah ... i dun wanna waste $$ too much on that ... btw, not too sure about the market price for those promotion.
most of the search engines dont use meta tag information anymore, because there are too many webmasters abuse it. Try to include your keywords in your body text, but the position, density all very important.
Before you want to do any optimasation, do evaluate your competitors first.
I wrote something about keywords before, you can take a look at http://www.qoolventure.com/keyword.htm

Nice write up. Thanks. :D It is really helpful to know that all this factors affect listing on the serach engines. Thanks again fred
Then again, they are those factors that affect rankings .... but what about the basic part of getting listed on the search engine ? I have done a manual updating of my site but how long it takes ? Seems like its gonna be weeks or months .... well, of course i'm talking about the free listing.
I've also some difficulties in getting into lycos and some other sites and thus unable to list my site there too ... any other ways of doing it ?
Keywords might be important but content is still the KING.. :)

It takes at least a month (if you are lucky) to be in the next update but usually much longer or not at all. Some engines like Inktomi & Lycos require yearly paid listing to have a 'guaranted inclusion'.
From my experience, a simple text link from a well established site to your new site will give a faster inclusion by the search engines than manual submit at their homepage. And good PageRank as well.

Like for example ? Well established site like ....... ? Hmmm, like www.sgwebhostingtalk.com ? Hmm, dunno whether the mods can help :D
I believe alien means have a good pagerank while refering to "well established". To see a site's PR, you need to download google toolbar.
Basically, after optimising your site, you can only get high rank while there are alot of sites with good PR, at least 4,5 and above is linking to you.
Yes, content is king, provided your targeted key phrases are exist in your content, else search engines wont recognise it.
The well established sites refer to those that are already listed in the major search engines (ATW, AV,Google,Ink,MSN,etc) with some backward links (link popularity), doesn't has to be sites like Yahoo, although most really well-established sites have Google PR of atleast 5.
To get high PR, you need lottsa incoming links (NOT link farms), good content, etc.
Google Toolbar @ http://toolbar.google.com/
So, can i simply put if you got a lot of links from other website, you will get a better ranking ? Or shld i say if you got some links from very popular sites, you will get better ranking ?
Btw, i'm more interested in getting listed on search engine rather than having top 3 rank (maybe later). i've manually submitted to quite a number of sites but until now no news, no findings .... how can i do it better ? :dunno:
