What kind of technical knowledge are you refering to? I assume your question cluster around website building and here it goes...

Basic knowledge of scripts and language is somewhat essential. Even if you are using a web portal, simply HTML is definitely required.

However, if your webhost is technical savvy, you could approach them and good/helpful host could help in this area, even it is beyond their scope, direct or indirectly.

you have to ask urself, why are you needing a webhosting account in the first place?

to do a homepage? a webpage? The skills that you need are plainly for your personal webpage and it will only give u a good or bad webbie depending on your skills.

I really don't know. I guess html skill is require for writing a web page.

How about those skill require to set up a forum and also to load whatever setup to the hosting server. And do you need to know about security skill for your webpage and forum and maintaining the site also.

I guess it is more of a personal webpage with a private forum for some friends to leave message in it, of course a few email account for family members.

It is actually rather easy to do all that you're looking for nowadays.

You don't really need to have programming knowledge, most of the basic stuff is just point and click.

HTML skills? You could check out some of the html editors out there, basically, they allow you to create html pages easily and quickly. A good one would be dreamweaver, it has many powerful features and produces rather good quality code.

HTML is also quite easy to pick out and there are tons of free templates available on the Internet.

hmmmz.... why don't you go figure out what ya wann do 1st and then try to do some research on it?? say for eg, if ya wanna setup a forum, find out which forum you have in mind and look at the installation faq and see if ya can figure out anything about it, such as, what scripting language it uses, what database it supports (or your desired), etc... if ya gonna host a vbulletin forum (like this forum here), then you'll need php & mysql support... if u gonna use snitz forum, then u'll need asp supprt (i.e. you'll need a windows host)... that's more or less i i got myself acquainted with web hosting... anything more chim i dunno lioaz... :P

i tink when it comes to web hosts, it's more of knowing what you wanna do with and what kind of capabilities you require of the host rather than real back-end technical skills... :)

Thanks to all who reply.

I just go and do a search on what to people use on what tools or programming language before they will embark on subscribing to a web host. :D

Learn plain HTML first. If you don't understand HTML it's quite hard to learning web application platform development.

You will do well to learn the HTTP protocol basics too.

Before we tok about skills, you must know you aim and purpose for doing this. If your aim is a personal web page, then I suggest you learn some basic HTML and maybe hit some book on dreamweaver/frontpage. With these u should be able to come out with a simple web page. Of cos how nice it look wil depend on your creativity and experience with the programs.

For forum and such, you can get a free forum, just do a search for it in yahoo. One of them is proboards. Or you can get a webhost that provide you with a mysql database. Then if a control panel is included, like Cpanel there are are already forum scripts installed. All you need is just to set it up with a few clicks. If not you can alway download opensource forum codes and install them.

As you can see there are not much skills you need. Most are point and get stuffs. Of cos if you wan to make it more personal, then some CSS, design as well as php coding skills might come in useful.

Last but not least, you must know how to use a ftp client and ftp you files to your webhost server. Or at least know how to upload files.
