I find this quite true to some extend, singaporean wants thing to be cheap and demend a high standard from the web hosting company.

From a survey I do recently, there is people who want the below for $20-30 per month.

- Dual Xeon CPU
- 2GB Memory
- SCSI Storage with RAID5
- Load Balancing :(
- 300MB Space

Very true for every end-user to get the very best quality of services for every cent they pay however with the above configuration and the price it just simply don't match...

the only thing good in singapore is the b/w is free.

i am going to colo a server at tampines data center, hope my unlimited b/w will be able to attract some customers.

not all singaporean are kiasu. just because they are poor.

ppl also must understand they pay for quality

You will be in trouble if you offer unlimited bandwidth. Do a search on unlimited bandwidth around in this forums and you will know why unlimited bandwidth doesnt stand at all.

Well, our plan is not to focus on the singapore market only. It's way too competitive. Singaporeans expect the world for a few dollars. I have tried talking to a few who wanted webhosting and they were like... why so little bandwidth ah? why cannot more... :argue:

We just started not long ago and we tried to source for more overseas clients. Quite a few of our clients are freelance web designers who are willing to pay more for quality service and support as they have a reputation to keep. Anyway singapore's webhosting market is quite saturated in my opinion. Take a look at the Computer Times on wednesday. There's so many <$10 hosts :bangwall: Not sure how to compete also...

Anyway, could I have the name of the Tampines Datacenter? Might want to co-lo a server there. Thanks

I don't think that's very true. It's just they are not willing to pay IMHO. They are willing to spend $50 a week on 4D and Toto. So what's $20 a month for webhosting service? This is with regards to companies or organisations i mean, not students. :D

Thanks!
I called up a provider called CyberHeart and they said they had a cybercenter in tampines. I live in tampines. Would be great to have it so close. If there's no one in the middle of the night to reboot my box i could sneak in and restart it myself. Anyone used them before?

Thanks for the quote. Now I know who to call :D

Well, I started out as a one-man show. (Don't we all? :p ) Had only about 3-4 clients during the first month. So was alright. No real support issues. Now there's a few more. Got a few sales reps to do the sales part and they often help out in the support tickets.

Thanks for the compliment. :D

That's good. Did you manage to get his name?

Yup, I'm from TP too :D

Advertising? Hmmm... most of them came to our site and saw our Jobs link. They just dropped us an email and we later negotiated their commission rates on AIM or ICQ. Get AIM. Most americans use that.

hey jeremylim,

i just visited your website and believe that the prices are all in US$ rite??
I almost misunderstood till i saw the US$3 per gig bandwidth.
Think it will be nicer if you could state somewhere more prominent about which currency you are toking abt.
And credit card is the only form of payment??

BTW, neorder and jermeylim guess what?
I am from TP 2, although graduated quite long ago.
hahaha

Last of all, good luck to your webhosting business.

Hmmm..
thanks! I will make the necessary changes to it.

Payment can be made via the major credit cards like diners, visa, mastercard, amex, etc. I think online checks is accepted too. They are handled by Paysystems.

Our alternative processor is Paypal. Actually I love using paypal. Its transaction charges are cheap, deposits into my UOB account for a few bucks and is easy to use. Bad thing is only customers from 40+ countries in the world can be accepted and it protrays a rather negative image. Keeping it as a payment option because some ppl still don't like to key in their credit card numbers over the net and 1 of the most common question is "Do you accept Paypal?"

Yeah... I'm about to graduate soon too. Last sem for me. Ppl around me think it's not a profitable business. Wait till they realise this is a booming business!

True true... no one seems interested. Even my girlfriend told me this: "you and your stupid webhosting lah..." :bangwall:

Its a good habit to state the currency on pricing especially if you are working on an international + local scale. Many people take for granted that the charges are in SGD due to the fact that you are actually based in Singapore.

Actually most important is that we need to have good business plan which certainly includes marketing and advertising as well as quality products and service irregardless of pre or after sales.

Well, before i started this, i got it planned... I hope.. :D

During the last few months, I've gotten some 'reps' and 'support' staff to help out in the day to day running of the business.
The reason is that while I'm asleep and out or what, they are able to man the live chat, the helpdesk and source for clients. Seems to be working out alright. So i guess when i'm in army things should be ok. Anyway, I've got friends that can help out since they've finished army already. This is what I hope will happen when i go ns.

Got to pray hard also lah...

i will only state USD price, then i upload a script that ppl can use it to convert USD to their own currency.

it's a bad idea to state both SGD and USD together or just show SGD price.

Zoomer
12-03-2003, 22:37
Why would you feel that its a bad idea to have both SGD and USD shown?

For some pages, I didn't even place the amount in US dollars. Reason being the US isn't my target market.

then you should be able to state your price in japan, china, malaysia, taiwan, hongkong etc.currency too. although i will aim on asia market, but most ppl who holding credit card are using USD. so i only state USD loh.

I state prices based on my targets. There really isn't any real incentive in having too much information posted. Sometimes, it can have a negative effect for the page would then look crowded and messy.

royong

Doesn't seem like IWI coz the phone numbers etc are all different. Anyway, in any industry, there will be competition from different angles ... some resort to slashing prices for the same product, some resort to freebies while others resort simply to following a what seems to be a successful formula.

The business world is cruel ... so bear with it. I'm sure IWI wouldn't mind the competition .... : P

hmm their colo like iwi as the price is about the same....

If anyone want colo i can give abit lower then them.

below is the price for the moment

1U = $100 wif 10 IPS
2U = $180 wif 15 IPS
4U = $270 wif 20 IPS

As you will wonder i can give so low as i have quite some servers that there.
