Hi!
I like to setup a text images links/banner exchange network for mainly Singapore websites,
I think the cheapest way is to use open sources program like OpenAds which is recommended by my friend.
I dont know anything about php mySQL programming or anything else besides some basic html programing, so I required some one to install setup and test run the program, also advise on what kind of hosting plan needed to run the website.
Hope members here can give tips and advise on this, your feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks
For hosting plan, think of what is going to be hosted. Since you say it's a network, then i don't think you'll be hosting all the sites. Will you instead be hosting the graphics banner then? Then think of how many you'll need, it's total space consumption.
As for the setup and test run, why don't you find a partner who knows how to do it? Else, if this is for a profitable cause, then why not engage a developer's help?
:)

Thanks Oops! for your feedback and tips.
I am very new to webhosting so i dont know much about which hosting package is best. Especially the php, mySQL .....
The image banners will be hosted in-house, that mean members of the exchange network can upload to the network and have their image banners display to other members.
As for text banners i think they dont take up much bandwidth, is that true.
For a start, let say i have 50 friends joining the banner exchange network each with a website, 2 text banners and 2 image banners(this i think must control the size of the image). Esitimated volume 5,000/day text banner display, 2,000/day image banner display across the network. Appreciate if you could tell me which hosting package is best. Also i heard many hosting plan dont come with the openads software.
I dont think this is a profitable cause, it just another way to promote websites, 2 of them from me the other from my friends, who had websites for our small company mainly NON IT related company. We cant afford to buy expensive ads space to promote our websites, so this is just another way to increase traffic to our websites.
For your info, many of these websites are build by expert designers and was nicely setup, but many of them have less than 50 pages view a month for the last 1 or 2 years. When i come to know this i was shock!!!!
Some of owners spend $2000+ to build a 8 pages company website and later got less than 50 page view a month.
I dont have money to pay for a developer, I just want to start small first, if the exchange work then maybe ......
Thanks Oops! Appreciate your feedback! Sorry for such a long message.
No worries about long messages, i tend to write long messages too as i hoped that people will understand better.
Indeed, text banners will consume lesser bandwidth compared to image banners.
From your estimated statistics,
For a start, let say i have 50 friends joining the banner exchange network each with a website, 2 text banners and 2 image banners(this i think must control the size of the image). Esitimated volume 5,000/day text banner display, 2,000/day image banner display across the network. .
Assuming a image banner is 20KB and is text banner 10KB. You will potentially need:
Daily Data Transfer Usage (image banner): 2000 * 20KB = 40MB
Daily Data Transfer Usage (text banner): 5000 * 10KB = 50MB
Total Daily Usage = 90MB
Total Monthly Usage = 90MB * 30 = 2.7GB
Total Diskspace Usage = 50[(2 * 20KB) + (2 * 10KB)] = 3000KB = 3MB
The above is just a rough calculation for you. So i think as long as you get a basic package, it seems to more than enough. Hope that there's no errors in my quick calculation.
I have not used Openads before, so i can't advise on whether it is suitable for your needs. This is because, most commonly used ads management software are integrated for the portal itself, and not for a network.
As for the installation of Openads, i think just tell your hosting provider that you need it, and maybe you're willing to pay a one-time small amount fee for the effort, most should oblige. However, you should not expect them to support the 3rd party software.
Since this is not for a profitable cause, i can't recommend you to look for a solutions provider. This is because, the solutions provider will be able to manage your network for you, hardware, software, network, et cetera. In this case, you just need to focus on building the advertisers network, and of course paying money to your provider.
Hence, i thought if 5000 per day is all that you are asking, why don't you consider working with Google Adsense? It allows you to control your advertising campaign on a pay-per-use basis, you pay only when there's a click on your ad, and you instruct how much you're willing to pay for each click involved.
Hope this helps.

Ah, that's quick. Seems like we've fellow members riding on the information given here. But whatever the case is, my objective was to help you and hope i'm doing it well.
To install, i'm sure you can try to squeeze your hosting provider a little as a pre-condition before signing up. But if someone can actually help you setup and configure, then i think S$50.00 is worth the value.
I don't have much experience with Openads, though i can always try new things when i'm free. So feel free to check with me if you have some questions, just in case i can help. But first of all, since you'll be paying someone, try to squeeze him a little to help you setup everything properly first before letting him off, afterall it's his job!

Too bad, i'm not your host. :D
 You never say you do hosting!!!! How I know????
You should tell me early early, then I dont need to write so much and read so many thing from the setup guides, because I can --- squeeze your hosting company a little as a pre-condition before signing up.
LOL
Never mind if my new webhosting company dont do, i'll let you do
pre-condition apply before sign up.
PM me so that i can take a look on the webhosting service that you provide.
Thanks for your feedback.
Ah, don't set a trap for me. I don't want to be accused of self-advertising or have hidden agendas for helping.
Actually it's good that you know how to setup, maintain, and troubleshoot, without relying on your hosting provider too much. Of course it's good to have a helpful and friendly provider, but when time comes where you need to move to another host, you'll probably have a hard time working with the new team as you'd have been too pampered. But of course, we work along this line and pamper our customers alot, hopefully they won't leave us. :D

:) Today is the first time i use a program call FTP and it took me 12hours to transfer my first file up to my new hosting provider. I just dont understand how all these thing work. Especially when you host your site on a multiple domain hosting account.
I should have started with a single domain hosting it will be much easy to learn how to use the control panel.
But thinking back ....... it 12 hours well spent, at least i now know how to use FTP a little bit. Nowaday very good service from my webhoster, that even if i cant understand those details in CP he provide VIDEO clip to show me.
But still there is many thing to learn, especially when i try my first :kill FTP upload and transfer to my new hosting account, i make a big mistake by transferring 84mb of data to the site and later found that it was wrong, so i decided to delete the folder which contain all the wrong, trying to coverup and not letting my new hoster know. Ya! 1 funny thing is that after i deleted the 84mb of wrong file from the FILE MANAGER my CPANEL still show that i have used up 84mb of space.
Maybe all those file that is deleted from FILE Manager is still store in some where. Hopefully if my new webhoster saw this post can PM and tell me how to delete completely. Also i dont know how to setup a 404 not found page for my ADD On Domain.
If not i hope Oops! can help me out with tips on how to do this.
Thanks in advance!
The deal for the Openads is still open, just PM me your proposal.
